After a gap of 11 years, G.V.Prakash, Kollywood's happening music composer and nephew of A.R. Rahman, has sung a song for his uncle recently. This one is not for a film. Rahman is scoring the theme song for the World Classic Tamil Conference 2010, to be held in June at Coimbatore with Chief Minister Kalaignar himself writing a song. Ace lyricist Vairamutthu is also a part of this prestigious project.

One hears that three generations of Tamil singers from all over the world, proficient in different styles, will be crooning for the anthem. It was learnt that G.V. was invited by Rahman to sing one of the songs in the album.

G.V. Prakash confirmed that he had indeed sung the number, which was recorded at A.R. Rahman's K.M. Studio in Chennai recently. The young composer had not sung for any other music director after he became independent.

The last time he sang for A.R.Rahman was for the film Mudhalvan in 1999. The song was Azhagaana Raatchshiye.

Katrina Kaif is the latest celebrity to be impersonated on Twitter.

Labels:

Every moment Katrina spent on the sets of Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti, the news was being updated on Twitter. The authenticity of the details could lead anyone to believe that it was the actress herself who was tweeting. But it was an impersonator who created an account in Katrina’s name.

What was interesting was that the moment it was pack up time. the tweeting would stop. And it would begin only the next day at the same time when the shooting would begin. This went on for a couple of days, till a few friends brought this to her notice. An annoyed Kats probed into the issue only to find out that the mischief monger was one of the crew members of the film.

She then brought up the matter with the production house.

Rettaisuzhi Movie Review

Labels: , , , ,

Balachander and Bharathy Raja. These directors, who set trends with their unique style of narration, also deserve credit for introducing major talent.

What would happen when the two came together on screen? Obviously, expectations ran sky-high. This movie brought the two film making legends from behind the screen and placed them in front of the camera. In RettaiSuzhi they play contrasting characters who interact with a group of children in a rural milieu.

Debut director Thamira has done his best to create a lively entertainer which manages to live up to all the hype, at least in parts.

The story is set in Cheranmadevi, where Ramasamy (Balachander) lives. He’s a village bigwig and a Congress sympathizer.

He also happens to be at loggerheads with Singaravelan (Bharathy Raja), a hardcore Communist. The feud between them is nearly four decades old. Their grandchildren continue the legacy of mutual mistrust and lose no opportunity to express their aversion for each other.

But a romance brings about a complete turnaround between the warring factions.

Susheela (Anjali), who has been brought up in Singaravelan's house, is a schoolteacher who is in love with a guy called Murthy (Aari). Sympathizing with their true love, the children put aside their enmity and try to bring both families together so that the two can wed. Whether or not they succeed in this noble venture, forms the climax of the film.

Thamira has shown guts to weave a story around children, at a time when filmmakers are chasing big heroes and focusing on mass-appeal songs. Getting good work from children is no easy task, but Thamira has certainly pulled it off.

Balachander (KB) as a director proved himself a master at extracting the best from his artistes. He's turned out to be just the same as an actor, he knows what to give on screen and does exactly that. If KB is spontaneous, Bharathy Raja is articulate.
The veteran filmmaker is brilliant as an angry old man. Anjali looks good and suits her role, while Aari is adequate as the military guy. Karunas evokes laughter with his humorous turn as a cop.

Karthik Raja's songs are pleasant and hummable. The film could have been an Imayam or a Sigaram of Tamil cinema if only the director had concentrated more on the script. Produced by Shankar for S Pictures, the movie is typical of his home productions.

The remake of the Tamil hit film Khakha Khakha is all set to hit the floors. After Gautam Menon stepped out of the film and Nishikant Kamath stepped in, Asin has been roped in as the leading lady and she will be paired with John Abraham for the first time.

Although Genelia was considered for the remake, they dropped the idea as John had already worked in Hook Ya Crook with Genelia and they wanted a fresh pairing. The film is important for John at this stage of his career as his last three films Ashayein, Hook ya Crook and Abbas Tyrewala’s next film have been put on hold for various reasons.

John is leaving no stone unturned to see that the film starts as per schedule. The film is now scheduled to go on the floors in May.

Paiyaa Movie Review.

Labels: , , , , , ,

Director Lingusamy tells us a simple love story with a road theme, leading us on a slick journey of romance, action, suspense and thrills, with some peppy music thrown in.

Karthi turns full-fledged commercial hero in this film, where he plays Shiva, a jobless engineering graduate and a carefree guy who hangs out with employed friends and stays with his sister Priya in Bengaluru. Shiva encounters Charu (Tamannah) at a bus stop and is smitten by her charms. It’s love at first sight for him.

He happens to meet her on a couple of other occasions and even misses an interview appointment, thanks to a sudden glimpse of Charu. One day,

when Shiva’s waiting at the railway station to pick up the owner of the car he uses, he’s surprised to see Charu approach him, accompanied by a man, to ask if he can take them to Chennai. She’s mistaken him for a driver! When the man leaves the car to pay the bill at the gas station, Charu urges Shiva to drive away quickly, leaving the man behind she requests him to take her to Mumbai.

The story picks up momentum at this point and races along till the interval.

An elated Shiva loves the idea of spending time with her, oblivious that there’s trouble brewing from a group of thugs who are after Charu and from another pack of hooligans who have their own agenda with Shiva. The rest of the story is as full of twists and turns as the couple’s journey.

After all those uncouth roles he played earlier, it comes as a whiff of fresh air to watch Karthi’s performance in Paiyaa. Clearly, he relishes his role. His versatile expressions, skilful dancing (he’s improved a lot in that department) and his convincing action sequences enhance his portrayal. But there is still a tinge of village accent in Karthi’s diction, which doesn’t match the character.

As usual Tamannah is vivacious and looks her glamorous best. Milind Soman has been wasted in an insignificant role. Jagan in a cameo provides

comic relief. Yuvan Shankar Raja is the real ‘Raja’ of the movie. His thumping music exudes the right mood, with Thuli Thuli and Adada Adai Mazhai being the pick of the lot.

Madhie’s camera work warrants mention, especially in the song sequences with Rajeevan’s artwork complementing it all.

While the first half is racy, after interval it moves at a more leisurely pace. Some of the stunt sequences, like for instance the one before interval and the one in the climax, are cliched and repetitive.

And why does the director depict Karthi as someone who does not even speak a word of English despite being an engineering graduate? The filmmaker, who adheres to his single-plot style of narration for most of the film, should be applauded for coming out with a clean, light hearted family entertainer. On the

whole it’s a smooth ride, with a few bumpy spots in between. Paiyaa, produced by the Thiruppathy Brothers and presented by Dayanidhi Alagiri, fits the holiday release slot snugly.

After roping in Kamal Haasan for his recently launched untitled movie, Udhayanidhi Stalin has been able to rope in Kamal's daughter Shruti Haasan for his next venture with Suriya, which is being directed by Murugadas.

The vivacious actress, who has shifted base to Mumbai, was in Chennai recently to hear the script. She was reportedly impressed and wants to be on board. Murugadas had said Shruti would fit the character he had conceived and he was ready to wait till she gave her nod. The Suriya-Murugadas combo created a buzz with their earlier blockbuster Ghajini. Now with Shruti's debut, it just gets bigger. The film has music by Harris Jayaraj and the composer has already made Shruti croon to a song in Vaaranam Aayiram. She might sing in this film also. Shruti may take a shot at belting out numbers in her Kollywood acting debut as well.
